Extreme surface decay rendered the image almost invisible when viewed straight on, but tilting the picture away from reflecting light made it clearer. To capture the image, the print was photographed at a steep angle instead of scanned and the resulting distorted digital file returned to its correct shape on the computer. Then the extensive restoration work could begin.
